Alexandria Resident Mason Butler Announces Campaign for Virginia House of Delegates, District 5

Independent-minded IT executive and community leader enters February 10 special election focused on accountability, public safety, and affordability

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Mason Butler, a longtime Alexandria resident, IT executive, and community volunteer, today announced his candidacy for the Virginia House of Delegates representing District 5 in the upcoming February 10 special election.

Butler, who has lived in Alexandria for more than a decade, is running on a platform centered on lowering the cost of living for all Alexandrians, ensuring competitive compensation for teachers and first responders, and demanding greater accountability from state government.

“Alexandria families are being squeezed from every direction—housing costs, groceries, childcare, you name it,” said Butler. “Richmond keeps spending, but working families aren’t seeing the relief they need. I’m running to change that.”

Butler emphasized that addressing affordability will be his top priority in the House of Delegates.

“Lowering the cost of living for all Alexandrians isn’t just a talking point for me—it’s the reason I’m in this race,” Butler said. “Whether you’re a young professional trying to afford your first apartment, a family struggling with childcare costs, or a senior on a fixed income, you deserve a delegate who’s fighting to keep more money in your pocket.”

A 20-year IT executive, Butler brings management and technology expertise to his candidacy. His deep roots in Alexandria include graduating from the Alexandria City Academy, serving as an Alexandria Election Official, and sitting on the city’s Scooter Commission. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of The Campagna Center and is an active member of Alexandria Rotary.

Butler’s campaign priorities include:

Lowering the Cost of Living: Fighting for tax relief, affordable housing solutions, and policies that reduce the financial burden on Alexandria families at every income level.

Supporting Public Servants: Advocating for competitive salaries for teachers, firefighters, and police officers to ensure they can afford to live in the communities they serve.

Government Accountability: Pushing for greater transparency in state spending and ensuring Alexandria’s tax dollars deliver real results for residents.

Infrastructure Investment: Addressing chronic flooding, transportation challenges, and quality-of-life issues affecting Alexandria residents.

“I’ve spent my career solving problems and holding people accountable for results,” Butler added. “Alexandria needs a delegate who will ask the tough questions about where our money is going—and demand better for our community.”

Butler and his wife Kristin reside in Old Town Alexandria with their dogs Derby and Lily Rose.

The special election for House of Delegates District 5 will be held on February 10, 2025. District 5 encompasses Alexandria and portions of Fairfax County.
